Black-tipped Darner? - Aeshna umbrosa - male

Black-tipped Darner? - Aeshna umbrosa - Male
Thompson Falls, Sanders County, Montana, USA
August 20, 2006
My first catch and release. I watched this guy for 45 minutes before realizing it wasn't going to land. It seemed to be patrolling a 30 foot section of riverbank. Once in a while it would run into another male that was guarding an adjacent section of river bank, and they would "fight". I finally caught this one with my daughter's toy butterfly net, and it was amazingly easy to catch!

Moved
Moved from Mosaic Darners.

It's time
to move it.

Beautiful photo
The shape of the terminal appendages eliminates Black-tipped. I think this is a Shadow Darner.

well,
it certainly behaved like the description for shadow darner. Flying late in the evening and low in the shadows of the riverbank. Do you feel confident enough for me to move it there?

give it a couple of days
and see whether any of the Ode experts will offer an ID. I'm confident that it is a male umbrosa.
