Nectaring at hawkweed / dandelion on a cool day (+10C) - November 3, 2012. This late in the season I'm trying to find as many species of Syrphidae as possible to establish just how late they fly. This looks like Eristalis dimidiata but I don't know if other similar Eristalis can be eliminated??

Flight period
I suspect they fly until flowers are gone or the first hard freeze. In my area near the coast the few remaining flowers attract insects because we have only had one light frost. Inland there was a hard freeze two weeks ago.
