Chubby Brown Caterpillar
Hi, Yurika - I feel certain it is an Elaphria, though your images do not match closely with any I could find on MPG (including your own for nucicolora!), BG, or Internet in general, or Wagner's Owlet book. I can see you have been searching awhile for an answer to this one! In your one image the head is so much smaller than the body. According to Wagner in the Owlet book, this small headed look is more evident in early instars. So it looks like yours may be an early instar. It seems to have some characteristics of the late instar for grata. My images were for a final instar. So it is possible it is a younger grata. The larger white dot on the front of the caterpillar, around the 3rd or 4th segment, is found at least on grata, festivoides, and nucicolora according to images in Wagner. Too bad if you were unable to raise it to an adult. You might have then had the first images ever taken and recorded of a particular instar for a known species.

The more I look at these,
the more I think they could be the Sugarcane, E nucicolora. What do you think? Maybe send Laci a note?

I still don't have that book and
Now amazon preview says "Pages 376-382 are not included in this book preview" and can not see it... :(
And if E nucicolora, NJ is too north for this southeastern species?

Instead of going to preview
go instead to search inside this book. Search for nucicolora and you should be able to see page 381

Thanks!
I could look at. But that particular
E. grata
caterpillar image isn't so good and can't say for sure... :( At least, color is a good match though...
