Interesting Wasp - Myzinum frontalis - male

Interesting Wasp - Myzinum frontalis - Male
Kelso Dunes, Mojave National Preserve, San Bernardino County, California, USA
September 22, 2012
Photographed on flowers of the desert shrub Petalonyx thurberi (common name: sandpaper plant).

Might this be a tiphiid, perhaps Myzinum? I thought I saw what looks like a sting, and so was guessing this was a female...but then I noticed a similar "sting-like" hooked barb on a post of a male. So I'm curious if & how one can tell male vs. female here.

Moved from Myzinum.

I just posted a related image
...of a similar looking wasp on the same bush, taken about 30 seconds before the wasp here. See thumb below:

Thanks, John
Glad I was on the right track. I'll check the "male" box.

Myzinum male
females are much more robust (less slender)

That is
a beauty!

I thought so too...
...and it seemed unusually pale, making for a subtle "pastel" effect.

Pretty Wasp!

Yes...
I wish I could have got a few more shots (e.g. of it's face), but it promptly flew off.
