tiny spotted Hairy Fungus Beetle - Litargus balteatus

tiny spotted Hairy Fungus Beetle - Litargus balteatus
Mesilla Park, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 18, 2006
Size: about 2 mm
This was the only member of its species that I collected during a half-hour or so beneath an incandescent light fixture in a carport my final night in New Mexico. Another, larger Hairy Fungus Beetle, Typh*aea sterco*ria, (family Mycetophagidae) was overwhelmingly the most numerous visitor to the lights.

This individual appears to have died between being collected Friday evening and being photographed Sunday evening.

When collecting beetles of this size an aspirator is a handy tool to use as it picks them right up and deposits them immediately into a vial from which escape is difficult. On this occasion, however, I used my licked finger method. by lightly touching or pressing a tiny beetle with my moist fingertip it adheres there long enough to place into my ever-present pocket vial.
