Ootheca - Stagmomantis carolina

Ootheca - Stagmomantis carolina
Blandy Experimental Farm and VA State Arboretum, Clarke County, Virginia, USA
November 18, 2012
I think this is a mantis ootheca and just posting this to confirm my suspicion rather than a specific ID to species.

Moved
Moved from ID Request. as it documents parasitoid activity.

Holes
The holes on the side are quite likely the result of emerging Braconid wasps which (as larva) have been feeding on the mantis nymphs.

parasitized ootheca
That's really amazing!

Yes
Mantid ootheca

Stagmomantis carolina
This would have produced Carolina mantises. There appear to be the heads of unemerged wasps present in two of the holes.

ootheca id
Thanks, I didn't know mantis ootheca were identifiable to species. I also wondered about the holes.
