Emerged from a leaf mine collected 10/16/2012. Host plant seems to be Ceanothus velutinus.

Balosus californicus
keys ok to B. californicus in Staines (2006); hard to see all key features (despite the high quality of this image). Recorded from OR in Staines (2006). Hosts are indicated as being Ceanothus spp. (which are related to buckthorn, if by buckthorn you mean Rhamnus spp.).

Yes, by buckthorn I just mean Rhamnaceae; it probably was a Ceanothus of some sort. I have two reared specimens, which I'll send to Charlie Staines for confirmation.
