Question Mark it is
Not rare in New Mexico, but not particularly common either. Mostly it is found associated with the deciduous "forests" along lower elevation streams and rivers, and in towns. I don't think it's in the northwestern part of the state, but it's pretty much everywhere east from the Rio Grande valley and is in the southwest part.

Moved from ID Request.

Should be the the question mark butterfly
Polygonia interrogationis...The silver question mark on the ventral side of the hindwing is diagnostic

I agree - Question Mark - Polygonia interrogationis

Congratulations! It looks as if yours is the first record for this species from New Mexico. Welcome to Bugguide!
