Dragonfly - Libellula croceipennis

Dragonfly - Libellula croceipennis
Walnut, Los Angeles County, California, USA
August 24, 2006
Size: 3"
After 2 weeks I finally got the picture. A bright red dragonfly with transparent wings that have an orange and gold color to them. He is bright red but could also be called a fire orange in color. I thought he would fly away for good but he was very engaging. Once he realized I was not trying to catch him, he flew in front of my face and looked me in the eye very curious. I stood very still. After a few minutes, he let me walk up to the bougainvillia and take pictures. I walked around and he followed me and just seemed curious. He was chasing away a gold colored dragonfly then would come back. Can't quite find an exact name for him. The 2nd photo is to show the red color better.

Based on the combination of images
and Tim's recent work, we would say this is neon, and will move them there, but will frass the middle one for now.

If you're curious about the gold one that got away
check out Mexican Amberwing. I'm seeing quite a few of them in Orange County right now.
