Found in tall grass; elev. 6200 feet; I've seen similar in Arizona, but they are different.

Eleodes suturalis
A common species on the Plains. We used to call them "Horrid Beetles" when I was a kid, but I don't think you'll find that in a book (?). Some years they would come into the house in the sutumn and pile up behind furniture by the hundreds. The "horrid" part is from the strong odor they can release. They aren't horrid looking - but I think they are kind of pretty.
