Chalcophora fortis - female

Chalcophora fortis - Female
7 Km east of Paw Paw, Morgan County, West Virginia, USA
August 2, 2012
Size: 30 mm
This beetle was sunning on a very dry old telephone pole (typically buprestids are often seen on fresh new poles that are still wet with tar) on an arid, shaley mountain ridge. The main conifers in the area are Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus), Virginia Pine (P. virginiana), and Table Mountain Pine (P. pungens). Over many years around the same location, I had only seen abundant C. virginiensis and scarce C. liberta. I thought I had a new state record, but I see there is a recent posting on BugGuide from adjacent Hampshire County (see: ). Hampshire and Morgan counties are both in the far northeast corner of the state. Also, I have a friend who found C .fortis in State College, PA - so maybe this range extension is not so far fetched after all? 39.5232, -78.3636
