Size: 16 mm
Found on freshly cut White Birch log. This very cool beetle seems out of place in Maine, but at least nice to know that So. Cal doesn't have all the good tenebs. It released a secretion that turned my fingers brown for two weeks - looked like a silver nitrate burn. Some interesting things on the web about all the various anti-freeze-like compounds they produce, allowing the adults to over winter so far north.
