Cicindela scutellaris - male

Cicindela scutellaris - Male
Belgrade, Kennebec County, Maine, USA
September 12, 2012
Size: 14 mm
Abundant in old gravel pit and was found with four other species: repanda, formosa, tranquebarica, and punctulata. There were two distinct color variations. About half were bight purple, the others were greenish bronze.

I really like these pretty beetles but hadn't seen any in over 25 years. Thus, I was thrilled to find this healthy population just a few miles from my house. My daughter had a great time chasing and trying to get them in her net (actually it is getting them out of the net that is the real trick). When I was a kid in Maryland, I used to see many of the green and black color morphs in a nice pine barrens at the intersection of the old Rt. 3 and Benfield Blvd in Anne Arundel County. When I got back from college I was shocked to see that their habitat had been completely annihilated with the new construction of Interstate 97. That was a major bummer.
