Large Darkling Beetle - Coelocnemis californica

Large Darkling Beetle - Coelocnemis californica
Thompson Falls, Sanders County, Montana, USA
June 19, 2006
Size: around 25 mm?
Found under a pile of firewood. I'm guessing on genus based on other images in the guide.

Moved from Coelocnemis.

C. californica
overall shape, rough texture, and geographic location

Moved from Coelocnemis.

not Opatrinae
Coelocnemis is not Opatrinae. It is Coelometopinae.

Moved from Eleodes.

Not Eleodes.
I'm pretty sure this is actually a species of Coelocnemis, but it is very easy to get the two confused. Usually, Coelocnemis species have a wide pronotum (top of thorax), as this specimen has. Also, Coelocnemis is typical of ponderosa pine forests, while Eleodes are in high desert habitats, and lower elevations.

Coelocnemis characters
there are some Eleodes with wide pronotum and quite a number of species that live in ponderosa pine forest. What gives it away as Coelocnemis are the golden streaks of hair on the tibias. ( visible on hind right)

Thanks Eric
That helps a lot.

Eleodes suturalis?

This specimen seems to be more pitted and less distinctly lined than your shot.
