Hudson, New Hampshire, USA

Moved from Underwings.

Hmm
On the lined form of angusi there is usually a lot more black...looking like Catocala flebilis, the mournful underwing.

Ethan,
I rotated and enhanced your image, to better ID. While blurred, all the characteristics are very distinct. I'm reasonably sure this is an Angus' Underwing - Hodges #8783, which would be a first for New Hampshire.

Catocala spp, most likely The Sweetheart (C. amatrix).

Thanks!
Is the underwing pattern necessary for diagnostic identification? Or can most specimens be identified when their wings are closed?

Underwings
Ethan,
Most Catocalas can be ID'd with wings closed, paying very close attention to written descriptions. Some of the HW patterns can be very similar between different species.
