Among many swallowtails puddling on the riverbank was this one lone checkerspot.

I think this is actually
E. anicia
. A photo of the upper side (if you have one?) might change my mind. The two look very similar on the under side, and there isn't enough showing of the upper side in your photo for that to help much.
