Black Fly Simulium male? - Simulium - male

Black Fly Simulium male? - Simulium - Male
Lenexa, Johnson County, Kansas, USA
April 14, 2012
Size: ~2.5mm
Came to a MVL in a woodland/remnant tallgrass prairie area.

It is a male Simulium vittatu
It is a male Simulium vittatum species complex... which means it could either be Simulium vittatum or Simulium tribulatum or another sister to the species that has the same scutal plate pattern. It is definitely a Simulium.

Moved
Moved from Black Flies.

Probably Simulium
Probably Simulium because it has a color pattern.

Moved from Flies.

There are quite a few flies with big red eyes

Hummm....
those two examples both have aristate antennae. I got my idea that it might be a male simulid in Marshall's new book: Flies on page 159.
But...I sure can't say for sure. :-)
I wonder what it is about big red eyes that would be an advantage to a fly?
