Photographed on Mondarda fistulosa

Hanging Thief Fly
Moved from ID Request.

Steve,
I "cropped the image to emphasize the bug." This is most likely a D. neoternatus, but someone knowledgeable of keying robbers, will have to make that call. Merry Christmas.

Happy New Year
Thank you Robert. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Amazing!
What an amazing creature. Thanks for the enlightenment. Based on the picture and location, is it feasible to get it to the species level?

Diogmites…
See reference here.

Thank you
Much appreciated. I'm obviously a neophyte, but I'm trying.

Well…
I think this predatory fly would be proud to know that you thought it was a wasp because that is precisely it's intention - to look like a wasp in order to try to lure one in close enough to capture it. They are great wasp mimics.
