Nosodendridae, ventral, face - Nosodendron unicolor

Nosodendridae, ventral, face - Nosodendron unicolor
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
August 27, 2012
Size: 5+ mm
This looks particularly disturbing. Did the mites congregate on the face after the beetle was put into the freezer? Or might the mites have been on the face prior to the cold? And if so, were the mites interfering with the beetle's life?
