Roadside Sallow?, #9944 - Metaxaglaea viatica

Roadside Sallow?, #9944 - Metaxaglaea viatica
n.w. Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
December 18, 2012
Size: FW 22.5mm
These -glaea's are tough! I just identified Chaetaglaea tremula at this location a month ago and now something very similar...but different shows up. I'd like confirmation as Metaxaglaea viatica before I move this to the species page. It seems to have the distinctive toothy PM line with dots of that species. Gillaspy listed the species for the Austin area and the Univ. of Texas Insect Collection has nine specimens from Travis and Bastrop Cos. The present moth was photographed at a porchlight in a wooded (juniper-oak-elm) suburban area.

Yes -
your moth looks like mine but I have to concede that on the basis of posted images a definitive assignment to a particular species may not be possible, and our BG editors will not try. I found this ancient post from which I learned that the ventral side of the forewing would be helpful. However, on that post a ventral shot was provided and did not settle the ID either! Anyway, next time perhaps we should refrigerate the moth and then take a picture while it is lying on its back.

New technology?
I'm hoping for Xmas to receive new camera gear which can focus down to the DNA sequence level. It should be out soon. ;-)
