Dogwood Sawflies - Macremphytus testaceus

Athol, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA

There were lots of these larvae on the underside of dogwood leaves at the edge of a river.

Apparently there are three spp. of these that feed on Dogwood, so I'm putting them at the genus level.

Dogwood Sawfly.

I think that these guys may actually be Dogwood sawflies, Macremphytus tarsatus, because they were found on dogwood and not anything in the genus Juglans. In addition, if you look at the structure of the wax on the other sawflies, you can see that it looks quite different. While older dogwood sawflies have a crazy spot pattern, young ones are typically covered in this waxy fur.
