Possibly americanus? It has the brown facial stripe, but I don't know what else is needed.

Yes (to genus at least)! Black border on the abdomen - combined with marginated abdomen, straight R4+5 vein, continuous band on tergite 4, and non-curved bands on tergites is Eupeodes (Metasyrphus).
