Lacewing with debris

Lacewing with debris
Bennett Place, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
August 27, 2006
Size: 4mm
This was found by someone else on a field trip. I took it home and shot some photos with the full cap of debris, then removed as much as I could with a brush. This finally allowed me to get a shot of the critter underneath, which was about 4 mm long. The debris ball was initially 7 mm across, and much bulkier than the larval lacewing.

I did not notice this until after I posted the photo--one can see several feathery appendages on the dorsal surface. Presumably these help hold the debris in place.
