Which fritillary? -
Speyeria hesperis
-
Payson Lakes (Wasatch Mountains), Utah County, Utah, USA
August 27, 2006
This was a medium-sized butterfly (smaller than a Monarch but bigger than a Cabbage White)found at approximately 7000 ft. Does anyone have an idea which fritillary this is?

Since all the other Hesperis Fritillaries
were placed in their respective subspecies, it seems only fair that this one should be too. :0)
You might also see those from the Wasatch region refered to as
wasatchia
, or
chitone
. There is a bit about that under the
Info
section for the subspecies.

I love it!
Thanks very much for doing that. I have so many of those fritillary-looking butterflies that I have no idea what they are. It's nice to see someone knows these things.

Speyeria hesperis female
The pattern, reddish color below, and apparent lack of silver on spots below all favor this species. It is a worn individual, making it look a bit duller/browner than it would have when fresh.

your welcome
I should add the qualifier that I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem to fit anything else, and I'm pretty sure this is what it is. A variable species, as are many of the Fritillaries, which makes positive identification a bit tricky sometimes.
