Iridopsis defectaria

Iridopsis defectaria
Adams County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 15, 2006
Looks similar to the Small Engrailed (Ectropis crepuscularia) but maybe not. Thanks for any help.

Moved from Bent-line Gray.

Thanks JD
I did not get your post of Jan. 3, 2008 so I apologize for the late response. Appreciate your ID and added comments.

No worries
I was doing some Guide cleaning and noticed it wasn't moved and there were no apparent objections, so I went ahead and moved it. Great photo by the way.

Maybe not...
After looking a bit, I think that this moth is a Bent-line Gray Moth (Iridopsis larvaria). Striations on the wing and overall color match a little better. Could also be a Brown-shaded Gray Moth (Iridopsis defecteria)

defectaria
I agree with I.defectaria. In I.larvaria the black PM line of the hindwing is more smoothly curved (almost sickle-like) as well as the black line above the HW discal spot being smoothly curved (sickle-like and toward anal margin). And most notably, the PM line of the forewing is particularly smoother in larvaria especially as it approaches the costa. In defectaria, the PM line does a bit of a loose zig-zag as it approaches the costa.

Thanks....
I think I will go with the Iridopsis larvaria, Michael. Very close to both.

Thanks,
