larva from alder wood

larva from alder wood
San Leandro, Alameda County, California, USA
January 6, 2013
Size: 4mm
This larva was from the same alder tree branch that had a lot of these Hylocurus hirtellus beetles. I think the larva is a scolytid .... but is it possible to know the species? The larva was a bit larger than the adult beetles I saw -- 4mm vs 3mm.
