Black wasp

Black wasp
Springfield, Virginia, USA
July 14, 2004
I saw this wasp during mid-summer. It was flying around a potted plant on my patio and I photographed it once it landed. Not the clearest picture, I admit, but any help identifying is appreciated.

Spider wasp
Definitely a pompilid, but not sure beyond that, even to subfamily. Members of the Pepsinae have small teeth or serrations on the hind femora (shins), whereas those in the Pompilinae do not. Do you have any other angles of this one?

Pompilid
Unfortunately this is the only shot I was able to get for this insect. I usually try to get a profile shot and/or a picture from above, but this wasp flew off in a hurry.
