Gaurotes cyanipennis

Gaurotes cyanipennis
Hereford, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA
June 8, 2005
Size: 11 mm
Many were seen swarming over thick (1-2 inch diameter), woody poison ivy vines that had had been cut off at their bases one week earlier. I carefully collected some of the vines, but unfortunately was not able rear any beetles. 39.6011, -70,6426

All of the specimens that I have seen from central and eastern Mayland are bright silvery blue. Dr. John Glaser (Addenda to the Checklist of Maryland Cerambycidae, Maryland Entomologist, Volume 3, Number 4, March 1992) reported that in Maryland, all beetles east of Dans Mountain in Allegany County are blue whereas all the specimens to the west (Garrett and far western Allegany Counties) are purple.
