Orlando Fl, Urban Dwelling. Found in washing machine. - Cithaeron praedonius

Found tonight

I live in Orlando Florida and found this spider tonight. I believe it is Cithaeron Praedonius. I’m not sure how to post the picture.

I'm sending the specimen to someone with equipment that allows him to take these quality photos of the microscopic evidence. I expect these photos will be on their way shortly. Will post updates as I receive them.

We referred this spider here from reddit, because it's special and because we were stumped (now feeling vindicated - no WONDER I felt like I had ruled out every family in NA!). MrWheeler has seen many of these around - in fact we believe he posted another back in June 2012 with more challenging image quality. I've described how to recognize a male, and he reports seeing them, so hopefully we can add a mate to the guide soon!

Cithaeron praedonius?

Just came across this thread while trying to find a match in Tengellidae (no luck there!):

where some visually very similar spiders are being discussed and turned out to be Cithaeron praedonius. They're now known to be living in Florida (see here). The endites had me thinking something along the lines of Gnaphosidae, to which Cithaeronidae is related.

Let's see what others think, but it looks like a great match to me. If so, this would be a whole new family for BugGuide, and a very nice find indeed!

Bah, I looked in Tengellidae too (I also looked in Oonopidae, can I call that one amazing?) but I missed the article. I may have seen it before though and may be why it looked so familiar to me.

I don't know what it is at the moment but think I've seen something similar before so that gives me hope one of the others may recognize this. Does the size you put on it include the legs or just body length?

I think I was wrong, I think it's much smaller. Closer to 1/4 - 1/2 inch. Sorry about that.
