Waved Light Fly - Pyrgota undata

Waved Light Fly - Pyrgota undata
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 24, 2004
Found under a light on a wall, perhaps in pursuit of scarab beetles, as is often reported. It took off after I photographed it and flew off boldly. (Paul Beuk informed me on 4/6/2005 that he believes this is actually a male. Leaving sex undetermined. Image updated 4/27/18!)

Female, yes
You are rioght in assuming it is a female. The tip of the abdomen would be diffrent in males.

Paul
