how did you tell this apart
from Anorostoma, the heleomyzid?

 
Various differences
I didn't compare at the time, but looking now I see the MND key says Anorostoma has "eye horizontally oval", not like this fly, and the illustration (fig. 4) does not show the projecting chin. Also note in this fly the constricted longitudinal veins at the crossvein and the different wing pattern.
