Fly 5 - Aphaniosoma

Fly 5 - Aphaniosoma
Big Gypsum Valley, near Slickrock, San Miguel County, Colorado, USA
June 10, 2012
Size: 1mm
Desert Riparian, Chloropidae Olcella?

Aphaniosoma
It doesn't look like a chloropid to me. Small size, pattern and habitat are consistent with Aphaniosoma. Great find!

Aphaniosoma frontata?
Of the species listed by Wheeler (1961) it could be Aphaniosoma frontata and does not look like the other two.

Aphaniosoma sp.
My initial impression was Aphaniosoma as well, but I would be very cautious about going beyond genus. There are multiple undescribed species of Aphaniosoma so relying on Wheeler's (1961) species list may give only a small part of the story.

I agree
These flies are not known well enough to venture into species IDs from images alone.

Thanks all for a great ID
a neat new genus for the guide!

not Chloropidae
It's not a chloropid (wing venation doesn't match). It looks more like Chyromyidae, but I can't say for sure based on this image. I'd need a focused, dorsal view of the head and thorax to confirm the family (and possibly genus).
