don't quite know either
I live in Waco Texas and have found 4 of these creatures ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches this year. After researching furthur I have found out these bugs are mainly found in Florida to Mississippi, not in Texas. Well guess again!!! They're in Waco!

walking stick
I live in Pearland Texas and I have a very large walking stick with a male on top on my patio. It has been in the same spot for two days I got some great shots of it but I don't know how to post them.
