Springtail - Sminthurinus lawrencei

Springtail - Sminthurinus lawrencei
Cowichan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
January 23, 2013
Size: 0.6-0.7mm body length
Found on the lid to our recycling container. Another Katiannid I think. Subsegmented fourth antennal segment, so not Sminthurinus... Polykatianna again?

Moved from Sminthurinus niger.

Hopefully I'm not missing something here... not sure why these weren't moved sooner. If I made an error, just let me know and I'll put things back the way they were.

Evidently, Frans changed his mind...
...and I either overlooked the email or didn't get it. Nice catch!

Sure thing!
Although now, unfortunately, there are no images for S. niger. Maybe the empty page will encourage someone to go find some. :-)

Sminthurinus lawrencei
New species for the nearctics!
In habitus shots we can use this key to distinguish niger from lawrencei :
white eyebrows small and short, inbetween distance more than 2 times the width of an eyebrow : lawrencei
white eyebrows large and long, inbetween distance less than 2 times the width of an eyebrow

Moved
Moved from Katiannidae.

Katiannidae...
Quite interesting. At first it reminds me at the European Sminthurinus niger. Christiansen & Bellinger (1998) consider all nearctic records of S. niger as dark coulour forms of S. quadrimaculatus.
To verify the genus, we need a true anal shot: the anus in the center of the image, above the anus the dorsal anal valve, below the 2 ventral anal valves (left and right one). On the dorsal anal valve, in opposite position of the median suture between the 2 ventral anal valves, thus median, there is a distinct macroseta. In Sminthurinus this macroseta is bifid (bifurcate). In Katianna s.l. (Polykatianna, Neokatianna, Katiannina) it is not bifid. This is the 1st thing to check.

New series
Ha, there was one waiting for me in the same location, so I've posted a new set:

I included an anal shot, hope it's the right angle. I'll hang onto the springtail for a day or two so I can get more shots if needed. I have it setup in a cozy damp container with some bits and pieces from the area it was found in.

Sminthurinus niger
Given your extra uploaded series. Thanks!

...
I didn't get one of this individual, but I'll go looking for another today. Thanks!
