C. crocata - posterior dorsum - Castianeira crocata - female

C. crocata - posterior dorsum - Castianeira crocata - Female
Camp Maxey, Lamar County, Texas, USA
May 30, 2012
Size: 9.5mm
I think the working hypothesis has been that the red mark on C. crocata doesn't go all the way to the end. The hypothesis holds up with this specimen, if by end we mean actually reaching the spinnerets. It comes very close to reaching the spinnerets though. I'm working through a number of specimens in the descripta group and may end up making sense of this.

Det. J.T. Lapp 2013 per dorsal epigynum. Deposited in the UT insect collection, Austin, TX.

These are very nice. It's not looking great for our theory. =] Thanks for posting all these!
