Gall
Did you happen to take any photos of the gall this came from? As far as I know there aren't any pics of V. steyskali galls yet.

E. nauseosa?
As of publication of the fruit fly handbook(1) the only known host was Ericameria nauseosa (as Chrysothamnus nauseosus).
