Lucanus capreolus - male

Lucanus capreolus - Male
Baltimore City, Maryland, USA
July 19, 1999
Size: 40 mm
Collected on ground in Roland Park neighborhood (filling in an annoying hole for Maryland in the range map). Formerly abundant in the Friends School playground along North Charles Street that is set in a grove of big White Oaks that USED to have a thick mat of shredded hardwood mulch. At dusk on hot July days, you could see dozens emerging from the wood chips. In the early morning there would be many crows and squirrels eating any beetles that were still out. Unfortunately they got rid of the mulch and rubberized the whole place. I never saw any stags after that.
