May Beetle? - Phyllophaga

May Beetle? - Phyllophaga
Desoto, Dallas County, Texas, USA
February 7, 2013
Size: 15mm
I have neither the surgical skills nor the camera to get what is really needed for a good ID so I compensate with LOTS of pictures, hoping that some little detail will make a difference! I'll send to frass if none of them are helpful. Found just under surface of garden soil.

i'll ask Brad to take a look and decide
this series is very nice and, imho, worth keeping even w/o species name --although i'm pretty sure it shows enough to narrow the options down quite a bit. to my totally lay eye, the beast looks special --and, if nothing else, will certainly help getting a better idea of the diversity of the genus

nice series
as v says, this is a nice series. I'm fairly sure it is a male (males often have a modification of the rear part of the abdomen, and it looks slightly modified to me).

As for species, I'm not sure. I'd suggest keeping the series though, as maybe we can figure it out someday.

I agree

Phyllophaga
probably can't go further without looking at its nast parts...which I am sure Brad Barnd would be more than happy to do... :o)

That's what I figured!
Thanks!
