but not a Velvet Ant. This is a pretty typical female Anoplius semirufus. It is most similar to A. apiculatus but I see two really good characters: the very shiny abdomen and the prominent apical abdominal tergite (makes the butt look a little bulbous). I also see a very good shot of the tarsal comb spines (fuzzy, but good) on the far side of the wasp.
