beetle from Baccharis - Microrhopala rubrolineata

beetle from Baccharis - Microrhopala rubrolineata
Covelo Rd, Hwy 162, Mendocino County, California, USA
May 26, 2012
Looks like Microrhopala to me, but I'm confused by the red markings which don't exactly match anything identified to species in the guide.

The beetle was on Baccharis pilularis (coyote brush).

rubrolineata
I looked at the Microrhopala specimens at the UCB Essig museum. Many specimens identified by C.L. Staines as M. rubrolineata look exactly like this one, so I've moved this image to M. rubrolineata.

C.L. Staines has three subspecies for M. rubrolineata: signaticollis, rubrolineata, and militaris. Most of the militaris specimens have the same red pattern as this beetle, but some of the signaticollis do also. I wasn't able to spend enough time figuring out how the two subspecies differ (and am not sure I would have been able to figure it out). Not sure what the status is of these subspecies, but, in addition to the older specimens with subspecies names, there were some just-recently-identified by C.L. Staines Microrhopala specimens returned to the collection with these subspecies names.

At any rate, I'm happy to know what the species is.
