Cynipidae, jumping oak galls - Neuroterus saltarius

Cynipidae, jumping oak galls - Neuroterus saltarius
Center Point, Linn County, Iowa, USA
May 30, 2012
D Schlicht sent notice that there were jumping oak galls in the street. I asked him, pretty please (or did I beg?), would he send some as I had never seen them jumping. Dennis was a gem and sent the galls. (Thank you.)

I took the galls to the Loess Hills Prairie Conference http://www.nwaea.k12.ia.us/en/programs_and_services/loess_hills_prairie_seminar/ where they were a hit, especially among the young people.

Later I added some peat to the dish pan and noted that the galls on the dark peat substrate quit jumping whereas those on the white dish pan kept jumping.

If all goes well, if i am a good mimic of Mother Nature, at least some of the gall wasps should emerge in March.
