Is this a midge? - Culex pipiens - male

Is this a midge? - Culex pipiens - Male
Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
August 30, 2006
Size: about 2mm
I've never photographed one of these before. It has awfully fancy headgear (facegear?) - the midge photos I saw only had the two "feathers" to either side but not the "dustmop" in the middle.

there are two gents on here that will probably be able to tell you exactly what it is... but until they do i can guess like crazy. i say it is a male mosquito in the genus Psorophora.

Yes, mosquito
haha, feathers and a mop. Good way to describe it. The 'feathers' are the plumose antennae of the male. The female's antennae are described as pilose. The 'mop' is the proboscis or the mouthparts of the male.

So this is a male mosquito. And definetely something in the genus Culex. Sean?

...
Looks like Culex to me.
Can't really tell which species though. Probably pipiens/quinquefasciatus.

would be
quinquefasciatus right? little too far south for pipiens?

...
I have to check on that. There is some overlap between the "species" if that is what they are.
