"there are so few species of salpingines in North America, but I'm not convinced I know what the hell is going on! I honestly haven't looked at them seriously. I think there's even still controversy about whether the 'long nozzled' one is Rhinosimus or Salpingus.....
"The genus Rhinosimus was last looked at seriously by K.G. Blair (1932) The North American species of Rhinosimus (Col., Pythidae). Ent. Mon. Mag. 68: 253-255. He recognized three species: [1] lecontei Blair (new name) [=aenirostris LeC. nec Mannh.] -- Alaska to California; [2] viridiaeneus Rand. [=aenirostris Mannh., nitens LeC.] -- ME to BC & CA; and [3] pallipes Boheman --seems to be western. The key seems to me to be rather weak, at least in the separation of pallipes and viridiaeneus.

The only reason (so I've heard) that they spent all the time they did observing the behaviors of this species was because Anne thought it was some weird kind of weevil (‼). Even if not true, it makes for an interesting story..."
