chironomid pupa

chironomid pupa
Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
February 16, 2013
Size: 6 mm
Collected with submersed roots and stems of Phalaris arundinacea from stone-lined bed of Pine Tree Brook immediately below outlet of Pope's Pond.

Save the skin
Experts can identify Chironomidae from the shed pupal skin. Occasionally a species is only distinctive in some life stages.

re: Save the skin
are those the so-called thoracic horns projecting over the head?

Horns
The appendages projecting forward are thoracic horns, respiratory appendages, and maybe some other names.

re: Horns
They are plumose in a lot of web images. I wonder if they are not here because riffle habitat has plenty of 02.

Probably
Branched respiratory organs are found in genera near Chironomus, which prefer slow moving water, often oxygen-poor.
