Collected with submersed roots and stems of
Phalaris arundinacea
from stone-lined bed of Pine Tree Brook immediately below outlet of Pope's Pond.

Save the skin
Experts can identify Chironomidae from the shed pupal skin. Occasionally a species is only distinctive in some life stages.

The appendages projecting forward are thoracic horns, respiratory appendages, and maybe some other names.

Probably
Branched respiratory organs are found in genera near
Chironomus
, which prefer slow moving water, often oxygen-poor.
