Size: 12 mm
Asellus communis, a/k/a Caecidotea communis. One of two anal appendages (uropods) missing. Found in submersed root mat of Phalaris arundinacea in stone-lined bed of Pine Tree Brook just below Pope's Pond outlet. Species ID based habitat/location (Williams, 1970, A Revision of North American Epigean Species of Asellus (Crustacea: Isopoda)) and Smith, 1995, Keys to the Freshwater Invertebrates of Massachusetts). The only congener known from MA, A. racovitsai, prefers cold seeps and springs in inland locations. Larger images here
