rear venter, water sowbug - Caecidotea - Male
Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
February 16, 2013
Size: 12 mm
The last few pairs of appendages are modified into broad membranes forming a flattened respiratory sac split down the middle. A pair of short, fan-tipped organs just in front of the sac alternately inflate and deflate it by beating water into the slit. This individual is a male because it has an additional pair of curved narrow appendages in front of the fan-tipped ones.
