i belive
this is Species Hemileuca hera - Hera Buckmoth - Hodges#7741..i had a Hemileuca caterpillar last summer found on sage, (which is how i put the Hemileuca with the hera)...this is a great picture thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the ID... Are they "good"? I think I have a photo of it in the caterpillar stage and also mating if you need anymore. Do you recommend an insect guidebook that would be pertinent to Idaho? I have the Kaufman guide, but it seems to lack a lot of the insects I have found. Thanks.

 
of course they are good! sure post them!
they aren't invasive, they dont hurt the sage and they are ever so beautiful. BUT, i wouldn't ever try to pick one up (caterpillar as they sting..this whole family stings) as to books look right above your photo on this page then click on books and there is pages of them...another great thing is Moth Photographers Group, and you could join a bunch of us on facebook at Mothing and Mothwatching.
