Handsome bee - Nomia nortoni - male

Handsome bee - Nomia nortoni - Male
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
September 3, 2006
Size: 15 mm
Pretty sure this is a male, by the long antennae and the fact it didn't sting me when I caught it in my hand. Is it a digger bee? I've never seen one with these enlarged hind legs before. The creamy stripes on the abdomen have a greenish iridescence - very striking.

Awesome bee! It is a male of
Awesome bee! It is a male of the very distinct genus Nomia.

Thanks, Martin!
Very distinct indeed! I never would have guessed it was a sweat bee - though that lovely iridescence on the stripes makes more sense now!

I found a key to the five species of Nomia in FL here, and I've keyed this out as Nomia nortoni - the only one with the iridescent stripes and the giant legs.
