Large brown imago mayfly - Isonychia

Large brown imago mayfly - Isonychia
Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana, USA
May 1, 2008
Size: 5/8" long or 16mm

Thank you Roger. How do you
Thank you Roger.
How do you know it's female? With many (Baetis and Ephemerella Dorothea) the males have bulbous rusty red eyes, among other differences. Would the male Isonychia have larger redder eyes too?

Mayfly imago sex differentiation
Mayfly imagoes can usually be differentiated by sex based on a combination of eye size/shape, presence/absence of claspers, foreleg length, and general body proportion. Male imagoes usually have larger eyes, claspers, longer forelegs, and a somewhat less stout body than their female counterparts.

In Isonychia, the male imago has a more a globular eye shape, than its female counterpart, which has a flatter (less-rounded) eye shape. Hope this satisfactorily answers your questions.
