Flower Fly (Syrphidae)? - Villa

Flower Fly (Syrphidae)? - Villa
Weslaco, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
March 3, 2013
Size: 1/2 Inch
Taken at Estero Llano Grande

Moved from Bee Flies.

Villa, perhaps?

Yes, it is Villa.
No ID to species available now; genus needs revision. In SoCal, Villa is the genus I see most and by a large margin.

BTW, Robin, bee flies are fuzzy and syrphids are generally smooth.

How common is this to Texas?

Unfortunatly, I couldn't say.
Maybe the experts will be able to tell you. (If I'm right about the genus, we have a dozen or more submissions from TX.)
